Universal Plant Services

Universal Plant Services is one of the largest comprehensive service providers for the energy industry, providing project management, installation, maintenance and repair services for rotating and fixed equipment for daily maintenance requirements, turnarounds, and capital projects.

Summary

Each Universal Plant Services (UPS) facility had their own internal process for reporting and tracking potential hazards—the most common method was a paper checklist. Employees would check a hazard type and write a description of the task, the hazard, and the recommended mitigation. There were numerous problems with this method, such as the time it took to manually record hazards, the fact that handwriting isn’t always legible, and most importantly—it wasn’t providing real-time data on workplace hazards.

My role in this project was to create a UI Style Guide to help save hours of retraining time in applications and ensure increased adoption rates. Additionally, I designed a Web Portal for managers to track reported hazards and a Native App for field employees to easily report hazards while on the job.
