Children’s Museum Houston

The Children’s Museum Houston provides child-centered learning to an audience of more than one million children and families each year. It is the only child-focused destination in Houston that empowers children to explore, play, and learn at their own pace. With 14 exhibits and daily events, there is always something new to experience at the Museum.

The Children’s Museum of Houston partnered with Poetic for a new, user-centered website. With a combination of market research, competitor analyses, and stakeholder interviews, Poetic established a strategy for a new website that caters to their visitors while also aligning with their organizational goals. We aimed to position the Museum as one of the world’s leaders in creating innovative child-centered learning experiences that change the lives of children and families.

UI/UX Design

The Museum had no official brand guidelines and branding was not part of the scope, so this was my first challenge. I sought inspiration from The Museum itself for a friendly color palette, elegant yet youthful typography, and playful illustrations.

I pulled colors from the main hallway’s decor—greens, blues, and purples. The yellow comes from the building’s iconic exterior and the berry pink color comes from the employees’ uniform shirts. We learned through interviews that The Museum sort of has a ‘crowded and dirty’ misconception. I wanted to help combat that with a clean and well-organized design, so visitors can have an easy user experience finding the information they need—especially since the website is likely to be a visitor’s first impression of The Musuem. To add a touch of playfulness, I pulled the various shapes from The Museum’s logo and created some simple textured illustrations.
